The Bird Base
The bird base is a common origami base that is necessary to create many origami models, such as the flapping bird or the crane.
Step 1: Create a square base, and have the open end positioned at the bottom
Step 2: Valley fold the left hand corner to the center crease line as shown below and crease
Step 3: Valley fold the right hand corner to the center crease and crease
Step 4: Valley fold the top triangle section down so the crease line barely touches the two flaps you just folded
Step 5: Unfold the last three folds
Step 6: Take the top flap of the bottom corner and begin to fold up, opening the flap as you go. This is called a petal fold.
Step 7: Continue to fold the flap up, and press the flaps down
Step 8: You are now done with the first half of the bird base. Repeat steps 2 through 7 on the other side to finish the bird base.
The completed bird base! You can now go on to make any models that require a bird base to be folded first.
